Neurofeedback for Dogs: What is it and how does it work?

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a way to observe and control activity in the brain to enhance how the brain thinks, feels, and performs. The electrochemical connections between neurons in a brain allow us to get a real time view of how it is operating in real time. Through these readings, we are able to identify stuck patterns and send low levels of stimulation to reduce symptoms of anxiety, ptsd, trauma, and more!

How exactly does your system work on a dog brain?

The brain is a complex, sophisticated, bioelectrical system comprised of billions of neurons that control all aspects of the human experience. Every thought, sensation, movement, and emotion are brought about by the electrical firing of neurons in the brain. Billions of these neurons synchronously fire together to emit waves of bioelectric energy that can be detected in the form of brain waves.

Healthy brain waves are balanced and predictable. In other words, a balanced brain produces the appropriate brain waves at the appropriate times.

On the other hand, brain imbalances occur when the brain is injured or stressed, which can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including anxiety, ptsd, fear, inability to focus, and many more.

significance of dog brain waves

The effectiveness of neurofeedback from an electrochemical level stems from its ability to interrupt unhealthy brain wave patterns and stimulate new, healthy ones. Much like rebooting a computer, it stimulates the brain to reset itself and develop new, healthy patterns.

A human brain is very similar to a canine brain from an electrochemical perspective, which means that we can use our technology to pick up the brain waves of both humans and canines. Our sessions are tailored to each dog based on preexisting conditions and real time brain activity.

Is this dangerous for my dog?

No, there is little to no risk associated with neurofeedback both short term and long term. The amount of energy being used by our technology is extremely minimal. The EEG Amplifier we use puts out a signal that is equivalent to about 1/100th of the strength of an AA battery, and far below anything a person or dog can feel or detect. We also use custom settings for each client and are able to optimize them as we learn more about how their brain responds to the stimulation.

What should I expect in a typical session for my dog?

A typical canine session lasts about 30 minutes. We start by allowing each dog to settle in and get comfortable standing, sitting, or laying down. Once they are relaxed, we attach small sensors to their head and neck in order to get a real time view of how their brain is operating. We then use a custom protocol based on the feedback to help stimulate healthy brain waves where they are needed. This process involves moving our sensors to different positions in order to monitor the response of the brain. Small electrical impulses are then sent to areas that need a “reboot” in order to help break stuck patterns and stimulate new ones.

what is a neurofeedback session like for dogs?

How many sessions will my dog need before I see an improvement?

The number of sessions needed will vary from dog to dog. While we have seen a major improvement in just 1 to 3 sessions, most dogs typically need 5 to 15 sessions to see a change.

The ideal part about neurofeedback is that it is non-invasive and requires no input from the dog. Therefore, the whole experience is stress-free and does not require any advanced obedience behaviors. This passive system and the cumulative nature of the technology makes it a fantastic option for behavior modification or management.

How can I sign up for a neurofeedback session?

We are currently taking applications for neurofeedback here. In addition, all of our clients at Crafty Canine Club and adopters at Crafty’s Crew Dog rescue are now eligible to sign up for an introductory session! All sessions will be conducted at our facility by Certified Neurogen Practioners. For more information about our technology, please visit Neurogen Brain Balancing
